Noa Tishby’s book, ** _ Israel: A Simple Guide to the Most Misunderstood
Country on Earth_** offers the reader a look into the complicated and
beautiful state of Israel. At this time of great challenge, JFamily and
JLearn offer moms in our community the unique opportunity to delve into
conversation and deep learning about Israel’s history and its unique place as
a Zionist country.
This book discussion will provide space for those looking for ways to think
and talk about Israel in a safe and pluralistic way. We will analyze Tishby’s
arguments, ask questions about the content of the book, and reflect on the
relationship between Israel and North American Jews today. Participants need
not have any experience or background to join the book club but will commit to
reading the book before each session.
**The book club will take place over the course of two sessions: January 24
and February 7, 7:00-8:30pm**. Each session will be dedicated to one half of
the book. We will discuss the first half of the book at the first session and
the second half at the subsequent session.
This book club is geared toward moms of children ages 18 and under. Discussion
will be facilitated by Rebecca Starr. Rebecca Starr is a local Jewish educator
and has been leading book club conversations for the community for nearly a
decade. She is the Director of Regional Programs for the Shalom Hartman
Institute, a leading educational organization in Israel and North America.
Rebecca is the parent of two sons, ages 13 and 16. She is married to Rabbi
Aaron Starr. All four members of the family are avid readers.
