Heaster Wheeler serves as a senior advisor for Secretary of State Jocelyn
Benson and uses his extensive public affairs experience and exceptional
alliance-building and speaking skills to help ensure the success of the
Michigan Department of State’s programs and initiatives. He is especially
dedicated to protecting the civil rights and voting rights of all
Michiganders.
Wheeler previously served as assistant Secretary of State for Michigan,
helping lead the department’s public engagement initiatives, ensuring that
eligible citizens from underrepresented communities had the access and
information they needed to cast their ballot. He also launched the
department’s first staff task force focused on race and equity.
He is an entrepreneur and founder of ‘Heaster Wheeler Speaks,’ which offers
services including community leadership and engagement, government affairs,
public speaking and voiceover acting.
Wheeler is currently part of many community initiatives such as the NAACP
Detroit Branch Political Education Committee, on which he serves as the chair
and the Fannie Lou Hamer Executive Committee. He serves as mentor to 9th
graders at his alma mater, Northwestern High School.
Wheeler has been employed in many positions that directly enhance the
betterment of people, including:
· Chief Innovation Officer for Black Family Development, Inc.
· Assistant County Executive for Wayne County
· Executive Director for the Detroit Branch NAACP
· Lobbyist for both Detroit Public Schools and Ameritech
· Master Mason with Prince Hall Lodge in Detroit and Wolverine Consistory
Mr. Wheeler graduated from Detroit Public schools and Wayne County Community
College and he completed the Executive Leadership Certification at Harvard
University. He is currently finishing a degree in African American Studies at
Wayne State University.
His philosophy is “The best way to predict the future is to create it.”
