Mary Einstein Shapero Memorial Lecture Series
The Jews of Iran: From the 20th Century to Modern Times
Join us for a fascinating 100-year journey through the history of the Jews of
Iran. Professor Lior B. Sternfeld, Associate Professor of History and Jewish
Studies at Penn State University, will explore how Iranian Jews moved from the
margins of society to playing a central role in Iran’s nation-building efforts
by the 1970s. He will examine how the community navigated the Iranian
Revolution, the challenges they faced under the Islamic Republic, and the role
Iranian Jews played in the relationship between Iran and Israel. Sternfeld
will also discuss the experiences of the Iranian Jewish diaspora following
1979.
Due to the generosity of The Honorable Judge Walter Shapero and Kathleen
Straus, this program is free and open to the community.
