Creator of the “Radioactive” podcast and senior reporter for JTA, Andrew Lapin will present an engrossing lecture on the rise and fall of Father Coughlin. Lapin will explore how Coughlin manipulated the new media technology of the radio to spread his messages of antisemitic demagoguery across the country from the Great Depression up until the Holocaust. The presentation discusses the historical, cultural and political factors that allowed him to become such a towering American media figure by spreading hate and conspiracy. Of course, he did all this from right here in the Detroit area, and among the figures who aligned against him early was Rabbi Fram (who was serving as a rabbi at Temple Beth El at that time). The talk also includes clips from his radio show.
